Kubernetes Training – From the First Pod to a Live Shop.

In three days, your team learns to run applications on Kubernetes: from containers and the cluster architecture through deployments, services and configuration to rollouts, persistent data, Ingress and hardening. Along the way, participants work together to bring an online shop into the cluster – until it is reachable at its own address and survives a failure test.

Learning Objectives

What Your Team Can Do After the Kubernetes Training

After three days, participants do not just know the Kubernetes objects – they have configured, updated and secured a multi-part application themselves and brought it back into service after a failure.

  • Understand containers, images and registries and explain the architecture of a Kubernetes cluster.
  • Create, scale and verify pods, Deployments and ReplicaSets declaratively via YAML manifests.
  • Connect applications to each other via Services and cluster-internal DNS.
  • Cleanly separate configuration and credentials from the image with ConfigMaps and Secrets.
  • Roll out new versions via rolling updates, safeguard them with probes and roll back in a controlled way when errors occur.
  • Retain data across pod restarts with volumes and PersistentVolumeClaims.
  • Make applications reachable under their own hostnames via Ingress.
  • Secure workloads with resource limits, securityContext and NetworkPolicies.
  • Analyze and fix faulty deployments systematically using events, logs and describe.

Target Audience

Who the Kubernetes Training Is For

The training is designed for teams that are introducing Kubernetes, running applications on it or will share responsibility for existing clusters in the future.

Audience

  • Administrators and operations teams taking over container platforms
  • DevOps engineers and platform teams
  • Developers who bring their own applications to Kubernetes
  • IT architects who want to understand Kubernetes from hands-on practice

Prerequisites

  • Confident use of the Linux command line
  • Basic networking knowledge, such as IP addresses, ports and DNS
  • Some initial exposure to containers is helpful, but not required

No prior knowledge of Kubernetes, YAML or programming is required.

The Hands-On Project

Mission Waffle Works – the Shop Moves into the Cluster

Monday morning, first day of the course: Clusterhausen Waffle Works – a fictional company, handmade since 1998 – is bringing its online shop to Kubernetes, and the participants are the new platform team. From this moment on, every exercise contributes to one goal. Three days later, the shop is configured, secured and reachable at its own address.

A “coming soon” page turns into a Deployment with multiple replicas, followed by Services, configuration and credentials, an order database with persistent storage and the path to the internet via Ingress. Along the way, the team rolls out new versions – including one that crashes on purpose. The shop stays online anyway, and the orders for the Pod Waffle survive every restart.

Target Picture from Day One

The map shows every building block of the shop. Before each chapter, it is clear which building block is being created now and what it is for.

Things Go Wrong – On Purpose

Version 3 of the shop crashes on startup. The team sees how rolling updates and probes prevent an outage, and rolls back in a controlled way.

Growing Independence

The first exercises provide close guidance; later, the sheets only define the goal and the acceptance criteria. Participants solve the finale largely on their own.

A Restore Point After Every Exercise

For every exercise, all manifests are available as a ready-made restore point. Anyone who gets stuck picks it up and is right back in.

Agenda

Kubernetes Training in Three Days

Day one lays the foundation, day two lets the application grow, and day three makes it production-ready. Every chapter leads into an exercise that adds a building block to the shop.

Day 1 Getting Started and the Foundation Containers, images and the architecture of Kubernetes. The first pod is running, and in the afternoon it becomes a Deployment with multiple replicas.

Topics

  • Container basics – virtual machines and containers compared
  • Images and registries
  • Mission Waffle Works – kickoff with the map
  • First steps with kubectl and the first pod
  • Architecture – control plane, nodes and their components
  • Objects, namespaces, labels and selectors
  • YAML and manifests – imperative and declarative
  • Deployments, ReplicaSets and self-healing

Exercises

  • The first pod – the “coming soon” page goes live
  • Exploring the cluster – the company’s namespace
  • Deployment and replicas – the shop runs three times over
Milestone: The shop runs as a Deployment with three replicas and heals itself when a pod fails.
Day 2 The Application Grows Services connect the building blocks, ConfigMaps and Secrets separate configuration from the image. A rollout goes wrong on purpose, and the order database gets persistent storage.

Topics

  • Services, Service types and DNS in the cluster
  • Environment variables and ConfigMaps
  • Secrets and their limits
  • Rolling updates, rollout history and rollback
  • Probes – startup, readiness and liveness
  • Volumes, PersistentVolumeClaims and StorageClasses
  • Running a database in the cluster

Exercises

  • Services and DNS – the shop and the waffle catalog find each other
  • Configuring the shop – opening hours and the recipe of the week
  • Securing credentials – the Secret for the order database
  • Rolling out version 2.0 – and version 3 crashes on purpose
  • The order database – orders survive the restart
Milestone: The shop is configured, can be updated without downtime and stores orders persistently.
Day 3 Production-Ready The shop goes online via Ingress, gets hardened and receives defined resources. In the finale, an admin interface is added, and a failure test under load shows what the team has built.

Topics

  • Ingress and hostnames, with an outlook on the Gateway API
  • Requests, limits and scheduling
  • securityContext and non-privileged containers
  • NetworkPolicies and RBAC at a glance
  • Workload types – StatefulSet, DaemonSet and Job
  • Helm as a package manager – demonstration
  • Troubleshooting with events, logs and describe

Exercises

  • The shop goes online – Ingress with its own hostnames
  • Getting production-ready – resources and hardening
  • The finale – admin interface, scaling and failure test
  • Bonus: debugging challenge – the waffle blog
Milestone: The shop is hardened, reachable at its own address and survives the failure test without interruption.

We adapt the order and depth to the group’s prior knowledge and pace. On request, we set priorities, such as extra time for Helm, security or examples from your environment.

Lab Environment

A Dedicated Cluster for Every Participant

Every participant works in their own fully prepared environment with their own Kubernetes cluster. All course images are preloaded, so the exercises start without waiting.

Your Own Cluster per Participant

Nobody shares a cluster. Everyone can delete, scale and provoke errors without disturbing anyone else.

Access via the Browser

The environment is conveniently accessible via the browser. No local installation is needed, and your IT department does not have to open anything up.

Tools Ready to Go

kubectl, an editor with YAML support and a terminal dashboard for the cluster are set up.

Fully Tested Before Every Course

All exercises are run through completely in the lab environment beforehand, including the deliberately built-in failure scenarios.

Ready-Made Restore Points

After every exercise, all manifests are available as a restore point, so participants can rejoin at any time.
