Zabbix Training – Monitoring That Really Alerts.

In three days, your team uses the current stable Zabbix release to build monitoring that does more than draw graphs: it collects data from servers, network devices, log files and interfaces, detects real problems and alerts the right people – without alert floods. The course motto: if you can produce a number, you can monitor it.

Learning Objectives

What Your Team Can Do After the Zabbix Training

After three days, every participant has built their own Zabbix environment, connected a wide range of data sources and set up alerting that holds up in day-to-day operations.

  • Explain the Zabbix architecture with server, database, frontend, agents and proxies, and plan it for your own environment.
  • Install Zabbix, create hosts, groups and users, and connect Linux and Windows systems with agent 2.
  • Design templates, items and triggers so that real problems are detected and alert floods do not happen.
  • Collect data via simple checks, SSH, SNMP, log files, zabbix_sender and REST APIs.
  • Turn raw values into meaningful metrics with value preprocessing and add custom checks via UserParameter.
  • Build alerting with media types, actions and escalation chains, and control it with tags and correlation.
  • Encrypt communication with PSK and certificates and protect credentials with secret macros.
  • Connect remote sites via proxies and proxy groups and plan maintenance windows properly.
  • Use dashboards, web monitoring and housekeeping for a Zabbix setup that can be run for the long term.

The Hands-On Project

Clusterhausen Waffle Works Gets Monitoring

Clusterhausen Waffle Works – a fictional company, handmade since 1998 – has grown: an online shop, the WaffelOrder order system, its own servers and several branches. So far, the company only notices outages when customers call. The participants are the new monitoring team and build the monitoring from the ground up.

The target picture is the map of data sources: agents on the servers, agentless checks for devices without an agent, log files, scripts that report their own results, and interfaces queried over HTTP. Every chapter taps into another source and checks it off on the map. At the end come alerting, a branch behind a proxy, the customers’ view of the shop and a dashboard for the team.

Milestone 1: Your Own Monitoring

By the end of day one, participants have built their own monitoring that raises a real alert when a real problem occurs.

Milestone 2: Every Data Source Tapped

On day two, the team opens up one source after another – from the agent through SNMP and log files to the REST API.

Milestone 3: Ready for Operations

On day three, monitoring turns into operations: escalation, encryption, proxies, maintenance windows and dashboards.

Prediction Checks and Transfer

Before anything is triggered comes the question of what should happen. The later exercises only define the goal and the acceptance criteria.

Map of data sources: the Zabbix server in the center, with six numbered ways of collecting data – agent, SNMP and simple checks, SSH, push via zabbix_sender, HTTP agent for REST APIs, and log files and the Windows event log. Zabbix Server (+ proxy per site) 1 Agent (active / passive) Agent 2 · Port 10050 / 10051 2 SNMP + Simple Checks agentless · no agent needed 3 SSH run commands directly 4 Push (zabbix_sender) Trapper · values pushed in 5 HTTP agent query REST APIs (JSON) 6 Logs / event log Files & Windows event log Six ways to get data into Zabbix · with agent: 1, 6 · without agent: 2, 3, 4, 5 · the proxy collects per site and forwards to the server
The map of data sources: each chapter on day two checks off another path.

Agenda

Zabbix Training in Three Days

Three days, three stages: the foundation, the data sources and operations. Each stage ends with a milestone that visibly works in your own environment.

Day 1 The Foundation Architecture, installation and the first monitored systems. By the end of the day, your own monitoring with templates and triggers is in place and alerts on a real problem.

Topics

  • Monitoring fundamentals and the core idea of the course
  • Architecture – server, database, frontend, agents and proxies
  • High availability for the Zabbix server
  • Installation and initial setup
  • Hosts, host and template groups, users
  • Zabbix agent 2 on Linux and Windows, active and passive
  • Templates, items and triggers
  • Avoiding alert floods – dependencies and sensible thresholds

Exercises

  • Bringing the control center online – setting up Zabbix
  • The company’s first servers check in – agent 2 on Linux and Windows
  • The first real alert – template, item and trigger
Milestone: Your own monitoring is up and running and raises an alert when something goes wrong on the company’s systems.
Day 2 Tapping Every Data Source The core of the course: getting data from almost any source and making it usable. Macros and tags keep the monitoring clear and manageable along the way.

Topics

  • Simple checks and SSH checks
  • Macros for reusable configuration
  • Custom checks with UserParameter
  • Value preprocessing – from JSONPath to throttling
  • Log file monitoring and the Windows event log
  • Push data with zabbix_sender
  • HTTP agent and REST APIs
  • SNMP for network devices
  • Tags and event correlation

Exercises

  • Reachability without an agent – simple and SSH checks
  • From raw values to metrics – custom checks and preprocessing
  • What happens at night – log files and push data
  • Tapping interfaces – values from a REST API
  • Keeping an eye on the network – SNMP and correlated alerts
Milestone: Every path on the data source map is tapped – the core idea is proven in your own environment.
Day 3 From Monitoring to Operations A working monitoring setup becomes an environment ready for operations: with escalation, encryption, remote sites, maintenance windows and a dashboard for the team.

Topics

  • Alerting – media types, actions and escalation chains
  • Security – PSK, certificates and secret macros
  • Users, roles, permissions and MFA
  • Proxies and proxy groups for remote sites
  • Maintenance windows
  • Web monitoring from the user’s perspective
  • Dashboards and widgets
  • Backup, housekeeping and best practices
  • Outlook – discovery and upcoming Zabbix releases

Exercises

  • Who gets woken up when – two-level escalation
  • Encrypted – certificates for server and agents
  • The South branch – connected via proxy and proxy group
  • The customer’s view – web monitoring
  • The team dashboard
Milestone: The monitoring is ready for operations: encrypted, with escalation, across sites and with a dashboard for the team.

We adapt the order and weighting to the group’s prior knowledge and pace. On request, we set priorities, such as network monitoring, Windows or monitoring your own applications.

Lab Environment

A Dedicated Monitoring Environment for Every Participant

Every participant works with their own Zabbix server as well as their own Linux and Windows systems to monitor. The environment is fully prepared and ready from the very first minute.

Dedicated Systems per Participant

Each person has exclusive use of a Zabbix server, a Linux system and a Windows system – for experiments, mistakes and real alerts.

Access via the Browser

The environment is conveniently accessible via the browser. No local installation is needed, and your IT department does not have to open anything up.

Alerts That Actually Arrive

Notifications land in a test mailbox within the lab environment. This makes every escalation level traceable without burdening real mailboxes.

Fully Tested Before Every Course

The exercises are run through in the lab environment before every course and checked against the Zabbix release in use.

Zabbix architecture: data sources deliver via agents or optionally via proxies to the Zabbix server with preprocessing, triggers and escalation; the database, web frontend and responses via email, webhook or ticket complete the picture. Data sources Agent (active / passive) SNMP devices Scripts · zabbix_sender REST APIs (HTTP agent) Logs · event log Proxy / Proxy Group (optional, per site) 10051 Zabbix Server Value Preprocessing Items → Triggers → Events Actions · escalation Database Config · History · Trends Web frontend UI · API (JSON-RPC) reads / writes DB Response Email · Webhook · Ticket Remote Commands Ports: passive agent 10050 · server/proxy 10051 · frontend HTTP(S) — all connections optionally TLS (PSK / certificates)
